The Compassion Tea Company (www.compassiontea.com) has added a few new accessories to their product line, so I was tasked with taking images for the website. I have been enjoying tea as of late, both to drink and to shoot. The golden hues on white glass is just beautiful. Here are a few snaps from the session. The tea pot images are fun. One has a blooming tea which is a handmade tea ball that slowly ‘blooms’ as it opens in the hot water. The other I used a black tea to get a rich copper color and you can witness the tea uncurling and slowly falling. One of the images is at the start of the infusion, before the tea had a chance to break through the small slits in the infuser and color the rest of the water in the teapot.

Doddle Illustration

I just finished up a new illustration for Doodle; a Film Industry App company. I was in charge of designing a banner for use at a tradeshow. Something to grab the viewers attention and give a quick visual of what the appliction does. The Doddle application is a hub for the production community, creating a platform to organize and orchestrate everything from Digital Call Sheets to Catering services. With this I brainstormed on the idea of a hub, the one stop shop, the Multi-Tool. That brought me to the idea of the Swiss Army Knife, the one tool that can take care of any problem or issue that arises. I played around with the idea of using icons speaking of the different functions instead of the usual ‘knife and scissors’ of the Swiss Army Knife, but time and budget would not allow it, so we went with a more literal display. I love these sorts of projects. I dont get that much of an opportunity to illustrate with many of my clients, so it is always a pleasure when I do.

Elegant Portraiture

I rarely do portraits, but now and then I am commissioned to make someone beautiful in front of the camera. Yes, sometimes a bit of photoshop magic happens to ‘enhance’ the models natural features, but I try to use it sparingly. This is a shot of Portland Stand-Up Comedian Beau Brousseau. I used his GQ stylings and suave appearance as a foundation to toy around with manual HDR effects.

Whimsical Ceramic Bulbs

Every few years I have the opportunity to find a potters wheel to sit behind and sling some mud around. I have been doing this on and off for years… mostly off, therefore the quality of my work is not always tip top, but every now and then something beautiful comes out of the kiln with my name on it. The easiest way for me to achieve this is to sneak into the kiln room before the firing and put my name on somebody elses beautiful work. But every once in a great while, that named piece was thrown with my own hands. These three pieces are, to me, three of those pieces. An interesting trio of bowls, vases or bulbs, I was lucky enough to get them put into a soda firing. A soda firing is where an amount of Soda Ash is thrown into the kiln mid firing. The ash then heats up and in the turbulent air mass, fuses in interesting patterns on the pieces combining with the minerals of the clay to create some beautiful results.

Fruits and Veggies

Over the past few years I have been working in the studio, manipulating light, playing with reflections and the subtleties of shape. One series that I got caught up in is a series of vegetables shot on black glass. I have some of them up on the LarsonImages site, but there are far too many to post, so I thought I would post a few of the newer ones. Peppers are always such interesting shapes, but every time I shoot them I think of the stunning Pepper series by Edward Weston. No point competing with those. Enjoy.

India Ink Imperial Stout

One of Basement Brewing’s flagship brews is the India Ink Imperial Stout. A beautifully rich brew that is released each December. I have had fun doing artwork, packaging and extra images for the Ink. I entered the 2010 India Ink into a couple of contests; the beer itself took first place in the Coho Spring Fling brew contest and the label design took gold in the BYO Magazine homebrew label contest. All of a sudden, the Ink took the world by storm and it went to my head, thus the photo of me with a couple of award winning bottles and medal. Good fun.

Patterned Beer Fixins

I have been playing around with different designs for my brewery, Basement Brewing Company and got side tracked with patterns. Patterns are always so simple to make and always amaze me. The new, secondary shapes that are created are usually much more interesting than the original intended design.

I recently finished the initial branding of a new online tea store, Compassion Tea Company. This is exactly why I love what I do. I had the opportunity to work with a great group of people, learn about tea… ALL about tea, and produce a branding package to help them bring their product to market. Designing and snapping photos is fun and all, but digging into a company, finding out who they are and what they want this entity they are creating to be and to represent is exciting. This blog was set in motion about two years ago. Obviously motion is probably not the best word for the static development thus far. I wanted to create a spot where I could post some of my latest projects both professional and personal, but I struggled with ‘finding a voice’ and keeping it professional for my business while still letting me have fun with it. So I woke up this morning with a stack of images and designs that I would love to display and figured that this will be MY voice, MY site. I will be posting mostly design and photo projects, but will also feel free to open it up to a bit of nonsense now and then to lighten the mood.I got into design and photo because 1) it would give me the opportunity to learn, in depth, about numerous industries and products and most importantly 2) it is what I love to do.

So here we go, let’s see what happens…
